In September 1805, Lt. Zebulon Pike was sent to scout the land of the upper Mississippi for a suitable place to build a fort . He camped at what is now “Pikes Island” at the mouth of the St. Peter’s river (later called the Minnesota).
Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 19, 1960): Fort Snelling (begun in 1820) was the first American fort in modern Minnesota, an important post on the edge of European-American settlement in the Old Northwest; additionally, it played a significant role in the transformation of the US Army from a small frontier force to that of a major modern army. The fort expanded several times, one of the largest expansions dating from the 1880s to the early 1900s and dubbed "New Fort Snelling ". It was at that time (after the Civil War), that Fort Snelling served as the headquarters and supply base for the Department of Dakota. There was another huge development at the Fort during WWII when the fort processed over 300,000 inductees and trained soldiers, though that development is now occupied by the Minneapolis airport. .
Snelling , Fort , now Minneapolis, Minnesota, established at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers in 1819 by Col. Henry Leavenworth as part of a general plan of frontier defense. First called Fort Saint Anthony, in 1825 its name was changed in honor of its commandant Col. Josiah Snelling . The fort 's commanders mediated between the Dakotas and Ojibwes (St. Peter's agency that was near the fort did this) and protected the headquarters of the American Fur Company.
Historic Fort Snelling

Historic Fort Snelling is a restored army post from the 1820's. Fort Snelling commanded a strategic position at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers at a time when the rivers were the highways and the fur trade was at its height. Though it's now in the middle of the Twin Cities, it was then the most isolated post in the army, being literally months away from supplies, iced in during the winter, and hundreds of miles out from settlement in what was still Indian land. During the 1960's and 70's, the walls and demolished buildings were reconstructed while the standing buildings were restored. T

History - Fort Snelling State Park

--> For hundreds of years before Europeans arrived, generations of Dakota people lived in villages along the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers that meet in Fort Snelling State Park. The river confluence was believed to be the place of origin and center of the earth by the bands of Mde-wa-kan-ton-wan Dakota, the "Dwellers by Mystic Lake." By the late 1600s, Europeans had visited the area. In the 1820s, historic Fort Snelling was built on the bluff above the two historic rivers to control the exploration, trade, and settlement on these waterways. In 1960, the landscape architect A. R. Nichols proposed a 2,400 acre park. He referred to the "population explosion" taking place in the Twin Cities region and pointed out t

However, it was not until 1820 that a permanent post named Fort St. Anthony was constructed under the supervision of Col. Josiah Snelling . Gen. Winfield Scott was so impressed with the conditions at Fort St. Anthony during his first inspection in 1824 that he recommended the installation be renamed Fort Snelling . Its original purpose was to keep peace on the western frontier, but in 1855 as the frontier moved further west, troops were withdrawn from Fort Snelling .
